Overall performance and capture rates for License Plate Recognition (LPR) are influenced greatly by lighting — an element that Infrared (IR) LPR and non-LPR and non-IR LPR cameras handle very differently. All of the cameras advertised as ‘LPR’ can read license plates, but the non-IR and non LPR specific cameras cannot read license plates in certain surroundings especially if it is dark and a car is using its high beams or there is bright lights facing the camera. The IR illumination and exposure available on our LPR cameras is especially useful in situations where different areas of the same scene are going to have varied lighting levels. Most all situations where you want to record and capture license plates are going to have these light variations because of headlights and streetlamps etc. For example, an LPR camera without IR illumination when in a dark environment with bright headlights or bright lights around it will fail to see the plate characters, whereas the TagMaster LPR IR illumination will break through that strong light and see the plate characters clearly.
